Hayao Miyazaki talks about his works and thoughts (A Selection of His Interviews)

1. Hayao Miyazaki Interview PONYO

Miyazaki: The greatest challenge we have right now is that my staff has aged along with me, and so we need to get some fresh blood into our studio. And we’re making those efforts, but that’s a big challenge we have. But of course I don’t want to fire my old staffs, so I want them to stay on, and we are trying to figure out ways where they can continue to work, as well as have [bring on] new staff. So the waves weren’t as difficult as I thought they would be. So as I was drawing, I thought, “Well, I should have done this from the beginning.” I realized that I should do it like an Ukiyo-e woodblock print, draw them that way. (more)

2. Hayao Miyazaki Wants You To Know Why Nausicaä Has Large Breasts

Miyazaki: That’s not only so she’ll be able to feed her children, or for sleeping with the guy she likes. They’re when she embraces the old man and old ladies in the castle when they are dying. I think her bosom is something like that. That’s why it had to become big. (more)

3. A god among animators

In 1997 the director signed a distribution deal with Disney. It was to prove a springboard to global renown, paving the way for a dedicated exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and helping him secure the 2003 Oscar for Spirited Away. Even so, the nature of Miyazaki’s films has been tweaked in transit. In Japan, his films are blockbusters the whole family can enjoy. In Britain and the US, he remains a predominantly adult, art-house phenomenon.

Miyazaki taps a cigarette from a silver case. The Disney deal suits him, he explains, because he has stuck to his guns. His refusal to grant merchandising rights means that there is no chance of any Nausicaa happy meals or Spirited Away video games. Furthermore, Disney wields no creative control. There is a rumor that when Harvey Weinstein was charged with handling the US release of Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki sent him a samurai sword in the post. Attached to the blade was a stark message: “No cuts.”

The director chortles. “Actually, my producer did that. Although I did go to New York to meet this man, this Harvey Weinstein, and I was bombarded with this aggressive attack, all these demands for cuts.” He smiles. “I defeated him.” (more)

4. The legendary director talks about his final and most controversial animated film, ‘The Wind Rises.’

HM: As I was growing up, I remember the last years of World War II. The period before Japan entered into World War II, this is the period of my parents. All of that is a grey color to me. I don’t know what happened. I didn’t know that much about that era. Jiro Horikoshi and Hori Tatsuo were two people that were very interesting to me. Both experienced very sad things in their lives during that period. From the tragedy they experienced, these two people, as I continued to look at them, became the one protagonist in my film. (more)

5. The following interview below is a report of the debate/press conference Miyazaki gave in Paris in late December 2001

Is it true that your films are all made without a script?

That’s true. I don’t have the story finished and ready when we start work on a film. I usually don’t have the time. So the story develops when I start drawing storyboards. The production starts very soon thereafter, while the storyboards are still developing. We never know where the story will go but we just keep working on the film as it develops. It’s a dangerous way to make an animation film and I would like it to be different, but unfortunately, that’s the way I work and everyone else is kind of forced to subject themselves to it. (more)

6. Miyazaki On Miyazaki: The Animation Genius On His Movies

Miyazaki on Miyazaki “I wanted to make an adventure story with the kind of boy hero who starts out fighting and has a lot of dreams. And I was able to confirm that people don’t come to see that kind of film! After the time, a lot of people started saying, ‘I love Laputa,’ but at the theatrical release, it didn’t attract much of an audience. A male is recognized as an adult when he has a job, an occupation. For a woman, her physical presence itself makes her a character, but a man needs to have this social occupation or some kind of status, or some kind of fate — something that you can’t see.

7. Animerica Anime & Manga Monthy magazine interview with Hayao Miyazaki
Copywrite 1997 Viz Communications, Inc.

MIYAZAKI: It’s because I wouldn’t want to draw a character like that as a human being. :: LAUGHS::

ANIMERICA: I’ve been reading MODEL GRAPHIX since the serial began. When Porco Rosso first showed up, I thought that it would make for some interesting animation…

MIYAZAKI: Pigs are creatures which might be loved, but they are never respected. They’re synonymous with greed, obesity, debauchery. The word “pig” itself is used as an insult. I’m not an agnostic or anything, but I don’t like a society that parades its righteousness. The righteousness of the U.S., the righteousness of Islam, the righteousness of China, the righteousness of this or that ethnic group, the righteousness of Greenpeace, the righteousness of the entrepreneur…. They all claim to be righteous, but they all try to coerce others into complying with their own standards. They restrain others through huge military power, economic power, political power or public opinions.

8. Hayao Miyazaki: Modern movies are too weird for me

“I can’t stand modern movies,” he winces. “The images are too weird and eccentric for me.” He shuns TV and most modern media, reading books or traveling instead. It is no surprise to find that the multimillionaire director’s car, parked outside the Ghibli studio, is an antique Citröen CV, an icon of minimalist, unfussy driving. ……”Young people are surrounded by virtual things,” he laments. “They lack real experience of life and lose their imaginations. Animators can only draw from their own experiences of pain and shock and emotions.”

Interviews on Live action Film “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” of Jojo’ Actor

Josuke higashiyama

Hirohiko Araki’s super popular comic “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険)which continues to increase fans with unique style and unusual worldview. The fourth part, “Diamond Is Unbreakable“(ダイヤモンドは砕けない), was made into a live-action film by directer Takashi Miike(三池崇史). In the fictitious city Morio-cho(杜王町), Kento Yamazaki(山崎賢人) playing the main character’s high school student Josuke Higashigata(東方仗助) and Yusuke Iseya(伊勢谷友介) play the character Kyujyo Jyotaro(空条承太郎)who tells the story  and fight with Kujyo Jyotaro. Jyotaro describes fights with friends who have special abilities (stands) and their friendship。

Q:  enthusiastic fans of Jojo are afraid how good the Story will be in Live- action Film. How do you feel when you received an offer?

Yamazaki: The pressure was very large. However, After I read the original manga, I realized that the Story, the character and the world view are really exciting. Then I found it cool to play Josuke and became a fun of him, as he has a strong will and very sharp and the world view of the work is cool, so I wanted to play it.

Iseya: I have always been reading “JoJo” since the start of the series, and I was particularly into it about part 3 and part 4. A special manga that likes that distinctive graphic and is truly respectful. There was quite a lot of pressure on how to do it in real life. In the world, I think that “this is the work I want it to be a Live-action movie, but at the same time,  I do not want to see it as a Live-action Film because of  the afraid to make a good Film. Honestly I needed courage, but there was an ego as an actor, “I wanted to play Jojo instead of other actors”.that is this is a very honorable Roll.

Q: In fact, at the cast announcement,  pros and cons goes up emerged from the original fan on Internet. Have you been nervous?

Iseya: I haven not read opinions about me on Internet. It is not a good habit to read such opinions  even if they are pros or cons. there is a possibility to betray support expectations from fans, but also to make it well against the  hostile remarks. So it makes no difference to read them in any case. I guess that every actors and actress try not to read such comments on Internet as less as possible. However, no matter how I try it, i cannot help but to notice some opinions. it is impossible to completely ignore it, though.

Yamazaki: Well, even though I do not like to read negative opinions on Internet,  I always tried not to care for. However I wanted to participate in the Miik Group in spite of such stress, sience all these casts were gathered, and great  and so I thought ‘I will do it!’

Iseya: I played in a movie called “CASSHERN” although it is a live-action work of animation, but SNS was not as much as now at that time (released in 2004), “Iseya’s face is different from Casshern I did not hear such a voice very much. But, since there are so many fans living in the visual of “JoJo”, it is said that the voice is coming “just different from Jyotaro” right now. I am used to such complains already (bitter smile).

In 1999 in the town of Morioh (杜王町 Moriō-chō) located in S-City, M-Prefecture (M県S市 Emu-ken, Esu-shi), Josuke Higashikata (東方 仗助 Higashikata Jōsuke, the kanji 助 suke, can also be read as jo) is a popular boy in high school who becomes quick friends with one of his classmates, Koichi Hirose. When Josuke’s nephew Jotaro Kujo (who’s older than Josuke himself, despite the fact his grandfather, Joseph Joestar, is Josuke’s biological father) appears, Josuke is suddenly pulled into the world of the supernatural powers known as Stands. One of DIO’s henchmen has brought the Bow and Arrow to Morioh, and someone has been using it on various people in the town, creating Stand users—as discovered when one of them, the murderer Anjuro “Angelo” Katagiri, uses the power of his Stand Aqua Necklace to try and kill Josuke for interfering with his plans to rob a store and generally disturb the peace in Morioh earlier. Aqua Necklace manages to kill Josuke’s grandfather, Ryohei Higashikata, in revenge for him being jailed by him. Josuke and Jotaro eventually capture him and, as a consequence of insulting Josuke’s hair, ends up getting fused to the rock he was leaning on at the time, becoming a tourist attraction known as “Angelo Rock” in the process…….

The cast includes:

Kento Yamazaki (Orange, Your Lie in April, Heroine Shikkaku, Wolf Girl and Black Prince, live-action Death Note television) as Jōsuke Higashikata
Ryunosuke Kamiki (Howl’s Moving Castle, The Secret World of Arrietty, Bakuman., Rurouni Kenshin Part II: Kyoto Inferno) as Kōichi Hirose

CLAMP: one of the most famous Manga artists group in Japan

Card Captor Sakura, one of the famous Work

Clamp (クランプ Kuranpu) is an all-female Japanese manga artist group that formed in the mid-1980s. It consists of leader Nanase Ohkawa (大川 七瀬 Ōkawa Nanase), and three artists whose roles shift for each series: Mokona (もこな Mokona), Tsubaki Nekoi (猫井 椿 Nekoi Tsubaki), and Satsuki Igarashi (いがらし 寒月 Igarashi Satsuki). Almost 100 million Clamp tankōbon copies have been sold worldwide as of October 2007.[1]
Beginning as an eleven-member dōjinshi circle in the mid-1980s, they began creating original work in 1987. By the time they debuted with RG Veda in 1989, the group was reduced to seven members. In 1993, three more members left, leaving the four members who are currently still part of the group. In 2006, the members decided to change their names; Ohkawa later changed her name back from Ageha Ohkawa to Nanase Ohkawa, while the other three members retained their new names.(Here more)

Who they are?

CLAMP (クランプ, Kuranpu) is an all-female Japanese mangaka group which has earned the title of the Queens of Shōjo (being shojo the manga directed to young girls). They have a very sadistic style which could be interpreted as manga for adult people, but also varying the themes of their series, from childish and comedic to dramatic, tragedy and teen-rated. They are worldwide known for Card Captor Sakura.

The group currently consists of four Osaka women: their leader, Nanase Ohkawa (大川 七瀬, Ōkawa Nanase), who provides much of the storyline, scripting and direction; Mokona (もこな, Mokona), formerly Mokona Apapa, who usually’s in charge of the art; Tsubaki Nekoi (猫井 椿, Nekoi Tsubaki), formerly Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi (いがらし 寒月, Igarashi Satsuki), she conserved her name but changed her Hiragana and Kanji (formerly 五十嵐さつき), both of them assistants.

They started as a dōjinshi circle called Clamp Cluster in the mid 1980s, drawing dôjinshis from 1987 until 1991. Originally, CLAMP was a 12-member group. They were: Mokona Apapa, Tsubaki Nekoi, Satsuki Igarashi, O-Kyon, Sei Nanao, Tamayo Akiyama, Leeza Sei, Sōshi Hishika, Kazue Nakamori, Shinya Ōmi.

Their dôjinshis were published in a collection called CLAMP BOOK. They also published a “doujinshi” collection called CLAP NEWS, which included small stories with their most recent series at the time, and artbook images. They currently reside in Tokyo.

CLAMP created their original artwork by 1987. Because of the successes they had, seven of them decided to go professionally, debuting with their first manga, RG Veda in 1989. The three additional members were: Nanao Sei 七穂せい, Hijiri Leeza 聖りいざ and Akiyama Tamayo 秋山たまよ, the latter having written DERAYD and CLUSTER with CLAMP. Akiyama is now a solo mangaka, and has completed a fourth volume of CLUSTER. Nanao Sei was the first of those three to quit the group as she saw no future in drawing anymore.(More)

What is best ClAMP’s Work?

  1. Tsubasa Chronicles (ツバサクロニクル)

A plot on a massive scale, spanning countless dimensions and time itself. An amazing tale of heroism, despair, determination, and tragic romance. A thousand gambits and contingency plans blend into one as Fei Wang seeks to fulfill his dream. Plot twists will hit you one after another, each more shocking than the last, all leading up to the most epic finale I have ever read.

Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE is personally my most favorite manga of all time. The story and plot was really interesting yet pretty confusing towards the end. Each character Fai & Kurogane especially Sakura & Syaoran all had some tragedy in their past and are going through a lot (as I said Sakura & Syaoran). I love all characters To me the story was so good whenever it got to the sad heart breaking parts you truly feel their pain and struggle. Their self-sacrifices for the one they love. Really this story is a real tear dropper it made me cry like a Baka :’)….(more Here)

the History of CLAMP and a big Status of the adoption Manga in USA.

The name Clamp may sound odd and unfamiliar to Western ears, but this four-woman studio ranks among the most successful creators of manga, or graphic novels, in Japan and the United States. Over the last 17 years these women — Satsuki Igarashi, Apapa Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Ageha Ohkawa — have produced 22 popular manga series, many of which have been adapted to animation, including “X,” “Chobits” and “Cardcaptor Sakura,” all available on DVD in the United States.

“Clamp have been an integral part of the manga explosion that’s occurred in the U.S. over the past several years,” said Dallas Middaugh, associate publisher of the Del Rey Manga division of Random House, in an e-mail message. “Their fluid, dramatic artwork and storytelling style struck a strong chord with male and female manga readers.”

More than one million copies of the “Tsubasa” manga have been sold in the United States, and next month Del Rey will publish a character guide to that popular series. The Houston-based FUNimation Entertainment recently announced that the 52-episode animated television program based on “Tsubasa” would be available on DVD in this country early next year.

When they discuss their work, the four artists of Clamp confer among themselves; then Ms. Ohkawa usually acts as spokeswoman.

Through an interpreter, Ms. Ohkawa explained in an interview that the studio began as a group of 11 art students who got together to create doujinshi, or fan comics: amateur publications that continue the adventures of popular animated and/or manga characters. No one remembers who chose the name Clamp, but it stuck, long after the group shrank to four members who became professionals.(more)

xxxHolic is an absolute succeeded Manga written by Clamp

xxxHolic is a famous popular Manga by Clamp. Here I corrected some Reviews on this Manga on Internet.

Abstract of the Story.

For me, xxxHolic walks a fine line. At its root, this series is a motley collection of morality tales framed by slapstick humor and J-horror. It’s something of a unique twist on the average anime (which isn’t particularly surprising coming from CLAMP), but, in the end, comes together with just enough cohesion to push it into a likable state.
At the start of the series, viewers are quickly introduced to all the major players. First and foremost is Kimihiro Watanuki, a teenage boy that sees both good and evil spirits. Watanuki doesn’t really enjoy this gift – he sees it more as a curse – and signs a contract with a wish granting woman named Yuuko to rid him of its presence. Unfortunately, Yuuko demands payment of Watanuki and thus employs him as a cook, messenger, and general servant. A number of other character act as support for Watanuki, but none are featured as much as the young gangly boy. From there you’ll experience a range of teenage subplots, everything from angst driven romances to male rivalry, all of which revolve around a series of loosely connected episodes that dance between the lighthearted and the macabre.
The plot, however, isn’t the first thing most viewers will notice…..Here you can read on.

Reviews: what is the attractiveness of this Manga?

I had initial doubts about this anime, no thanks to Tsubasa Chronicle which contained cross-over characters from xxxHolic and I just happen to really, really dislike the former.
Having said that, I am pleased to announce that xxxHolic is nothing like Tsubasa and I thoroughly enjoy this super-natural drama with a slice-of-life thrown in. Now, I’m not normally a big fan of horror and super-natural anime, but I felt that xxxHolic has achieved something that most series in the horror genre does not have. xxxHolic’s story is based on superstitious tales and folklore, rather than another dose of vampires that seem too common these days. And superstitious beliefs are something that is close to everyone’s heart – we had all believed in it one time or another, especially when we were still young. Now that we are older and wiser, we tend to dismiss it all as hogwash.
xxxHolic gives me a….(Here you can read more…)

Main Character “Kimihiro Watanaba”. Who is he?

Watanuki has short black hair, and blue/indigo eyes at the beginning of the series. He almost always wears his school uniform which varies between his school’s black jacket and trousers or simply his school trousers and a white short shirt.
When half way through both the anime and manga he loses the sight in his right eye due to a spider’s grudge curse, his left iris turns a dull milky grey color. After failing to retrieve his sight in this eye , he receives half of Doumeki’s right eye’s sight, which causes his right eye to turn a dark green with a brownish tint ( in the Anime), or gold-brown (in the Manga). For the majority of the series, however…(Here you can read more)

Yuuko Ichihara(壱原侑子):  a magical women in far-east Asia.

Being one extremely experienced in her industry, Yūko is not foolish enough to give away her real name like Watanuki. That aside, Yūko has served as a major catalyst for Watanuki’s transformation, acting somewhat as his mentor. She loves to drink and eat Watanuki’s wonderful cooking and dragging Watanuki on crazy outings at the drop of a hat.

Despite this immature and free-spirited attitude, Yūko has been known to be sage-like and serious when the time calls for it. Yūko seems to know the true hitsuzen that Watanuki will follow, and has often offered cryptic messages to warn him of impending danger or a folk tale that he should take a bit more seriously. She also seems to truly care about him, making sure he is safe at night, sending the Kudakitsune (pipe-fox) with him for extra protection, or calling Dōmeki when he needs saving. Yūko is very powerful when it comes to magic and…..(Here more).

Atom Mizuishi lent his Voice to Alphonse in the Movie “Full Alchemist” showed on 1th December

jump to the movie HP

It was announced that Atomu Mizuishi(水石亜飛夢)  is in charge of the voice of Al appearing in the live-action movie “Fullmetal alchemist“(鋼の錬金術師) nationwide released from December 1.

Atomu Mizuishi

Mizuishi is known for the musical ‘The Prince of Tennis’ 2nd season’ s second role, and in recent years he is appeared in the TV drama ‘GARO(牙狼)’ series, the movie ‘MUKOKU(武曲)’.

In this work, he was selected in the audition for Ed’s brother role played by Yosuke Yamada(山田涼介) .

Directer Fumihiko Sori‘s (曽利文彦) Comment

Mizuishi was selected as an actor for motion capture of CG Al at first, but gradually it revealed that he fits this roll and play it like stand-in. Once I filmed the scene that Al and Ed scrap with each other and in this scene they seem to be a real brother interacting with each other. Before filming, I supposed that the voice actor of Al was not Mizuishi but another person. As the Filming going on, his acting show itself so wonderful. Then I  decided to choose Mizuishi as the voice actor of Al in addition to Motion capture actor. So Mizusawa won this voice actor roll by his efforts. Rie Kugimiya(釘宮理恵),  Al’s voice actor of the animation version, agreed with my decision. She praised Mizuishi’s Al greatly, when she watched this movie in advance. so I and Mizuishi were so pleased that we could jump into the sky and I am satisfied with my judgment was not wrong.

Edward and Alphonse Elric live in the rural town of Resembool with their mother Trisha and their father Van Hohenheim, the latter having left home for an unknown reason. When Trisha dies of the plague, the brothers perform the forbidden alchemic technique of human transmutation in an attempt to resurrect her. Consequently, the transmutation backfires and in law with equivalent exchange, Edward’s left leg and Alphonse’s entire body are destroyed. Edward sacrifices his right arm to rescue Alphonse’s soul, binding it to a suit of armor with a blood seal. Edward is invited by Roy Mustang to become a State Alchemist to research a way to restore Alphonse’s body. Edward passes the State Alchemist exams, becoming the Fullmetal Alchemist, the title based on his prosthetic automail limbs and use of alchemy involving metal materials.

Voice actor Tanaka and Tokutake talked about “Kakegurui Compulsive Gamlber” in Kyoto

On September 17, “Special Talk Show on Compulsive Gambler in Kyo Mafu” was held in “Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2017“. Minami Tanaka(田中美海) and Tatsuya Tokutake(徳武 竜也) entered the Show. They talked about the attractiveness of the animation and characters refraining from the last round of on air and behind the after-recording scene.

Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler

Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair is a general trade fair related to manga and animation held in 2012 in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. Abbreviation is “Kyo Mifu(京まふ)”. In 2017, a variety of enterprises and organizations, including publishers, animation production companies, educational institutions, and many other past events, participated in it.
